Tragic Start To New Year As ATV Crash Kills Local Business Owner

It took less than 23 hours for the community to pour over $10,000 into a gofundme account set up for a Umatilla resident, parent, and businessman who died just after midnight on January 1 when he crashed while riding an ATV style vehicle on Lakeview Street in Umatilla.  Josh Carpenter, 36, of Umatilla died from his injuries at AdventHealth Waterman after a crash on Lakeview Street in Umatilla.
Florida Highway Patrol reports state the incident happened around 12:30 a.m.  Carpenter sustained fatal injuries after the ATV he was riding westbound on Lakeview Street overturned and came to rest on top of him. The crash occurred near his Lakeview Street home.
The FHP reported the crash occurred on Lakeview Street near Lakeshore Avenue, but early this week officials with the Umatilla Police Department, which was the first agency on the scene, reported the crash was near the city boat ramp on Lake Umatilla, further east of the officially reported location.
Carpenter was the owner and operator of J&S Motorsports in Umatilla, and by Monday morning there were several memorials in place in front of the closed SR 19 business.
The gofundme account set up to support Carpenter’s family quickly surpassed its $10,000 goal on Monday.
The business’s facebook page reached out to customers, advising on the situation and providing instructions to pick up property.
“Thank you all for your support, patience, and understanding,” said the post.
