Lake County To Offer Rebate To North Lake Garbage Customers

Lake County To Offer Rebate To North Lake Garbage Customers

Customers of Lake County’s garbage system living in north and northeast Lake County will soon receive a refund for the equivalent of one month’s cost of service.  The Lake County Commission on Tuesday approved the refund after a recent transition of haulers in the area resulted in service disruptions.
Residents in the Umatilla, Tavares, Sorrento, Pine Lakes, Paisley, Mount Plymouth, Mount Dora, Altoona, Astor, Eustis, and surrounding areas will receive a check from the county in the amount of $16.83, part of a $405,000 fund allocated to the program.
The issues began on October 1, when FCC Environmental Services Florida took over hauling in the area, taking over for GFL Solid Waste Southeast, LLC.  The normal issues with such a transition, including the new hauler learning all the roads and residents in the rural areas, were made worse by the arrival of Hurricane Ian, which further complicated hauling schedules.
On November 1, the commission began discussing the idea of giving a one-month proration on the annual garbage assessment charged residents, and on Tuesday made the move official.
“The Board of County Commissioners (Board) recognizes that the delayed or missed residential garbage collection has created a stressful situation for many residents,” said county commission chairman Sean Parks in a letter that will accompany the mailed refund checks.  “In response to the inconvenience that that transition has caused, the Board has authorized a partial refund equating to a one-month proration of your annual residential solid waste collection assessment.”
Properties with delinquent tax bills will not receive the checks.
Parks said the county will continue to work with its new hauler to improve garbage collection in the weeks ahead.
“The county staff continues to work diligently with the residents and FCC Environmental to smooth out collection services. Employees from other offices have been re-directed to assist with answering resident phone calls. Arrangements have been made with other entities to provide supplemental assistance with curbside collection. Convenience centers are also available at several locations as well including Lake County Landfill (Tavares), Astor, Clermont, Lady Lake, Paisley, and Pine Lakes. Please continue to notify us of missed collections at www.lakecountyfl.gov/curbsidepickup so we can work with FCC Environmental on route adjustments.”
