Locals Enjoy Weekend At The Rodeo

Large crowds gathered in Pierson on Friday and Saturday night, when the Pierson Lions Club hosted its 72nd annual rodeo.  Competitors from all over the region took to the ring in a variety of competitions for prize winnings and bragging rights, with rodeo fans of all ages enjoying the action.
Rodeo clowns, youth 'chicken chase' and 'calf scramble' allowed young people into the ring for the chance to win prizes, and Ivy Lloyd was crowned queen of the event and presented her sash by last year's queen, Millie Pell.  A large vendor area showcased country and western products, and Lions Club volunteers were busy selling hamburger and hotdog dinners to attendees.
But the highlight was inside the ring, where saddle bronc, roping, barrel racing, and bull riding competitions kept the audience entertained throughout the night.  On Friday night, livestock provided by the rodeo company T-Bar-T, dominated the evening, with few saddle bronc competitors completing full rides, and none of the eight bull riders able to last a full eight seconds.
The rodeo is a large fundraiser for the club, with proceeds from the event going toward supporting the club’s many community projects.
The event opened with a welcome from Lions Club president Jackie North, part of a ceremony that included an introduction of the rodeo queen contestants, the National Anthem, a prayer, and a special moment to introduce, by name, military veterans in the audience.  The veterans were brought into the ring individually, where they were introduced.
