Wednesday Afternoon Storm Update
Lake County is bracing for any potential impacts from Hurricane Helene on Wednesday.
Lake County was expecting winds and rain from Helene, with severity depending on the storm's actual path. On Wednesday, the storm was predicted to stay off Florida's west coast and eventually come ashore in north Florida.
Citizens are encouraged to call 352-253-9999 for storm-related questions.
Sandbags were available throughout the county, including in Astor next to the fire department on SR 40, at the East Lake Sports Complex in Sorrento, the Frank Brown Sports Complex in Mount Dora, and in Umatilla at the North Lake Regional Park.
- Lake County closed the Butler Street Boat Ramp in Astor Wednesday afternoon, with locals wishing to get their boats out of the water able to do so by calling 352-253-4950. Loading is available until 7 p.m. with advance notification.
- Duke Energy had mobilized nearly 5,000 units near The Villages to handle any outages that may come.
- SECO Energy announced it was ramping up storm response teams, with all employees on a ‘high alert’ status heading into Thursday.
- Lake County has scheduled a 5 p.m. live stream via its Facebook account to provide updates on county preparations.
- County sandbag locations are expected to close Thursday at noon.
