FCA Welcomes Tommy Bowden At Banquet Event

Supporters of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization in Lake County gathered on Sunday night to celebrate a successful start to the school year and to hear an inspirational talk from area leaders and former college football coach Tommy Bowden during the organization’s Heart of Champions Banquet.
Nearly 200 people attended the event, hosted at the Graceway church in Leesburg, to mark the growth in North Lake County’s FCA movement.  Area director Bobby Rowe led a program that included statistics showing the organization’s presence in area middle and high schools has led to the potential impact of over 12,000 young people, with weekly ‘huddles’, student-led campus meetings, reportedly drawing over 100 students per campus.
“We’re off to a great start,” Rowe said, noting that hundreds of Bibles and other spiritual support items have been distributed to young people, and adults, via the organization’s efforts.
Highlights of the evening included testimonial speeches from the likes of Mount Dora High School senior Joshua Collins and Leesburg High School head football coach Frank Scott, but the featured speaker was Bowden, former head coach at Clemson University and son to former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden.
Bowden mingled humorous stories from the football world with poignant moments surrounding his faith walk, with a focus on the need to raise young Christians in a troubled world.
"The American family is under attack," he said referencing changes he saw over the years doing in-home visits with recruits, and how time saw fewer and fewer fathers in homes.
Also, he said the current decline in regular church attendance has negatively impacted society and warned of continued societal decline if "we don't stop watering down the word of God."
