Worm Farming: Recycling Your Soil For Improved Results

Worm Farming: Recycling Your Soil For Improved Results

The Umatilla Garden Club hosted its monthly meeting on Saturday at the Umatilla Public Library's program room. The meeting started with snacks and social time with the program on "Worm Farming" beginning at 10 a.m.
There was a hands-on demonstration and a video program. Club members got to help create a worm habitat in a tote. The "Red Wrigglers" were added and off they went to do their thing. Worms are super helpful in the garden and produce wonderful potting soil that has been totally recycled for gardeners to use.
The club encourages members and guests to bring seeds, cuttings, or seedlings from their garden to trade or add to the raffle table. This month,  one club member, Michelle, brought a yuca tree that she grew from a cutting. The plant, along with others was raffled off during the meeting.   A big thank you to Dawn Brosowsky, who made beautiful refreshments for everyone to enjoy. She served homemade breads and spreads, sliced cucumbers with dill, salami, cheese, and olives. Visitors could make themselves a little sandwich or eat the pieces like a charcuterie board. Club President Ruth Cantillon opened the meeting and does a great job posting information throughout the month to pique the club members' interests about gardening opportunities and learning resources. If you missed the program, go to the Umatilla Garden Club's Facebook page to see the link to the program video. They are having so much fun learning new things about gardening each month. Next up will be their December meeting on Saturday, December 7. Visitors are always welcome.
