Area Election Results

    Lake County residents wrapped up several weeks of voting on Tuesday, determining a variety of local races and issues while chiming in on state and national races.  Lake County enjoyed a high turnout of 88%, and with 91 of 92 precincts reporting late Tuesday, the results are as follows:
    The most publicized county race this year saw incumbent Republican Lake County Property Appraiser Carey Baker mounting a write-in candidacy after a last-minute filing by fellow Republican Mark Jordan for the same office.  With Jordan as the only name on the ballot, he defeated Baker’s write-in effort with 76% of the vote to 24%.  
    In the House of Representatives District 26 which includes much of central Lake County, Republican Nan Cobb defeated Democrat Jackie Arndt with 65% of the vote to 35%.
    In the Supervisor of Elections race, incumbent Alan Hays faced only write-in competition and secured another term with 96% of the vote.
    A Lake County attempt to acquire $50 million in debt for land purchased passed with 80% of the vote.
    The City of Umatilla had a variety of measures on the ballot, with the following results:
    Question 1:  Creating city council districts - Yes: 1,435, No:  486.
    Question 2:  City manager to appoint city clerk, rather than city council - Yes:  1,214, No:  697.
    Question 3:  Places administrative responsibility for the city clerk to the city manager - Yes:  1,051, No:  852.
    Question 4:  Eliminating mayor, city clerk, chief of police, and fire chief as city officers, leaving council members and city manager as officers - Yes:  760, No:  1,164.  
    Question 5:  Provide city council discretion on scheduling for first meeting after an election - Yes:  1,415, No:  561.
    Question 6:  Make city candidacy requirements consistent with rules and dates of State of Florida - Yes:  1,436, No:  508.
    Question 7:  Altering council terms to begin with the first meeting after an election - Yes:  1,580, No:  329.
    Question 8:  Allow council members facing term limits to be able to run for council seats again after four years away from the position - Yes:   840, No:  1,102.
    Question 9:  Allows mid-term council appointments to remain in office for the rest of the seat term, rather than only until next election - Yes:  1,192, No:  688.
    City of Eustis Seat 4:  George Asbate - 3,940, Michael Gambino - 2,051, Nicie Parks - 2,626, John Potts - 587.
    City of Eustis Seat 5:  Emily Lee - 6,174, Blake Griswold - 2,795.
